Juan José López-Ibor Awards

The Juan José López-Ibor prize is an award on topics related to the dignity of people suffering from mental illness. It will be delivered every two years and created in collaboration with the Lundbeck Foundation.

The Juan J. López Ibor International Prize consists of a diploma, a sculpture made by José Luis Sánchez specially designed for the prize, and 40,000 Euros for the winner and for an institution that freely decides this, in equal parts.

The First Prize (2008) was given to Professor Leon Eisenberg, Professor (“Presley Professor”) of Social Medicine of the Department of Social Medicine and Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry, Faculty of Medicine, Harvard University, USA. during a special ceremony at the World Congress of Psychiatry in Prague that took place in September 2008.

The Juan José López-Ibor International Award (2010) was presented to Prof. Jules Angst, Professor Emeritus of Psychiatry at the University of Zurich and Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Heidelberg, Germany and to Dr. Eyad El-Sarraj, Palestinian Psychiatrist , peace and human rights activist, founder and president of the Gaza Community Mental Health Program, during the International Congress of the World Psychiatric Association held in Cairo in September 2010

The Juan José López-Ibor International Award (2012) was presented to Prof. Srinivasa Murthy, one of the leaders in the development of community mental health programs in India.

The amount of the Prize (40,000 €) went entirely to an Association dedicated to improving the quality of life of people affected by mental disability and their families, thus uniting humanism and mental health care in the second most populated country in the world.

It was delivered during the International Congress of the World Psychiatric Association that was held in Prague on October 17-21, 2012.
